http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking+News/Singapore/Story/STIStory_384497.html

My friend is fuming with anger after learning from the above news that after paying almost up to $600 for his dj class with a cert, which was recognised by MDA, Rane DJ Corporation, a GM of i-shop and a certified experience DJ from a club, is now totally useless. All these tie-ups serves no purpose anymore since ishop closed down.

The sales tactics from DJs Unity seem sincere but really is devious and are smoke & mirrors, becus my fren was told it was a one to one, he enrolled only to realize he had a combine class of 8 student taught by a club dj and time-line was so draggy that students left after 1.5hr although it was stated 2.5hrs.

In additional, he was conned another $600 for its Turntablism class which again promises one-to-one lesson only to be shared with 4 other students. All the lessons were taught by Andrew Chow & Leonardo.

He was told by DJs Unity, if he attended this class conducted by the famous local dj, his chances of being a resident in this famous local dj's club is higher when he shows them the cert.

In addition to that, he was asked to perform his mixing in ishop's roadshow, was given false hope by the sales person that the Celebrity Guest who gave him the cert like a grad ceremony, the celebrity being Glen Ong by the way, was interested to hire him for a mix showcase at class95. But alas, all talk no action.

Now with the closure of ishop and the retrenchment (sorry redeployment for better term sake) of all its sales staff, my friend feels cheated by both the DJ instructors as well as the sales team.

So this serves as a warning to keen dj hobbyist that if the centre offers you a cert, which is recognised by MDA, Rane, a GM of i-shop and a certified experience DJ from a club, most likely it is a sales pitch that trys to grab your dollar more than anything else.

We can learn from people who offer classes such as DJing, tennis, snooker or watever but the passion, which is in us, drives us to greater heights and not some cert that is recognised by MDA, RANE, GM of Ishop and a certified DJ from a club, let alone given to us by Glen Ong.

Pls dun take my word for it, take the pic Glen Ong handing you the worthless cert as a proof, the bogus DJ graduation ceremony with models alongside all the vids/urls as proof of fraud practise by some DJs.

Oh dear. A huge-ass can of worms has been opened.

But it's good to know about news like this. A timely warning for us to be careful about things like this.

56 Students since 2007 to 2009

56 X $600 = $33,600

iShop closing and not making a profit despite the $30k as added income from DJ fraudsters = EPIC FAIL & RETRENCHMENT

Caveat Emptor!

But seriously, did anyone attending these classes really think they were going to get something serious out of it? Like a job etc?

Either they knew nothing about the whole situation/scene or the sales pitch was pretty damm good.

Shocked Since when certification is required in the entertainment industry? How many DJs have certification anyway? Friends who have audio engineering certifications and have gone for post/ pre/ mastering etc job interviews still lost out to peeps who have better experience in the same line. Looks like they found the wrong mentor and have been smoked by publicity.

Still young la. They were prob in the, "I want to be famous", mentality.

That's true too. I always thought such so-called certificates were more for displaying at home, like some sort of trophy.

I've never heard of anyone who had to present a certificate stating they were qualified DJs if they were looking for a job as a DJ! Laughing

just coz they go to some I-shop course and get a cert means jack shit, seriously. what were the applicants hoping from that? Frankly I think anyone is better off spending $29 on How To DJ Right by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. just get a set of entry level stuff and then learn on your own lah...... or better still go to youtube and watch videos on how to do stuff musically. I still believe trial and error method is the best as opposed to classroom environments.

Whether or not these certs were meant to prove something, I think it's fair to say that the kids doing the DJ course were mislead about the worthiness of the certs.

And if it can be proven so, that is really outright cheating on ishop's part.

Just my opinion on this. Will have to wait and see what happens next.

I know ishop isn't an MLM business, but for this DJ school business thing they ran, the tactics they used are quite similar to "Direct sales"/MLM marketing styles.

I think the cert and the photos of all the good local DJs in front of their console was the best gimmick
